Cosmos (ATOM) is the native cryptocurrency of the Cosmos Hub, one of the first blockchains launched within the Cosmos network. The ATOM token plays a crucial role in the security and governance of the Cosmos Hub.
The Cosmos network aims to create an "internet of blockchains," a decentralized ecosystem where independent blockchains can communicate and interoperate with each other. This vision is realized through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, which allows different blockchains to exchange data and tokens seamlessly.
ATOM tokens are used for staking, which helps to secure the network through a Tendermint-based Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Stakers lock up their ATOM to validate transactions and are rewarded with newly minted ATOM and transaction fees.
