About the coin

Cosmos (ATOM) is the native cryptocurrency of the Cosmos Hub, one of the first blockchains launched within the Cosmos network. The ATOM token plays a crucial role in the security and governance of the Cosmos Hub.

The Cosmos network aims to create an "internet of blockchains," a decentralized ecosystem where independent blockchains can communicate and interoperate with each other. This vision is realized through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, which allows different blockchains to exchange data and tokens seamlessly.

ATOM tokens are used for staking, which helps to secure the network through a Tendermint-based Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Stakers lock up their ATOM to validate transactions and are rewarded with newly minted ATOM and transaction fees.

In addition to staking, ATOM is also used for governance. ATOM holders can participate in decision-making processes regarding the future development and upgrades of the Cosmos Hub. This includes voting on proposals related to network parameters, protocol changes, and the allocation of community funds.

The supply of ATOM is inflationary, with new tokens being minted to reward stakers and validators. The inflation rate can be adjusted through governance proposals.

ATOM is not a stablecoin, meaning its value is subject to market fluctuations.

The ATOM token exists natively on the Cosmos chain. It also has a presence on other blockchain networks as a token, adhering to specific token standards.

On the BNB Smart Chain, ATOM is available as a BEP-20 token. The contract address for ATOM on BNB Smart Chain is 0x0eb3a705fc54725037cc9e008bdede697f62f335. This allows ATOM to be used within the BNB Smart Chain ecosystem and to interact with applications built on that network.

The native ATOM token on the Cosmos chain has 8 decimal places, while the BEP-20 version on BNB Smart Chain has 18 decimal places. This difference in decimals is a technical specification related to how tokens are represented on each respective blockchain.

The Cosmos network emphasizes interoperability, enabling blockchains to connect and share information. This is a foundational aspect of the Cosmos ecosystem's design.

The ATOM token is integral to the economic model of the Cosmos Hub, incentivizing participation in network security and governance.

The active status of ATOM indicates that it is currently operational and being utilized within its respective networks.

Key functions of ATOM include:

  • Network security through staking.
  • Participation in on-chain governance.
  • Facilitating transactions within the Cosmos Hub.
  • Enabling interoperability through the IBC protocol.

The ATOM token's utility extends beyond a simple medium of exchange, embodying the principles of decentralized governance and network security within the Cosmos ecosystem.
