Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. Its primary function is to map human-readable names, such as 'yourname.eth', to machine-readable identifiers like Ethereum addresses, content hashes, and metadata.
The ENS protocol aims to simplify the way users interact with decentralized applications and blockchain technology. Instead of managing complex alphanumeric strings for wallet addresses or decentralized website URLs, users can associate them with memorable names.
The ENS system operates as a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. It consists of two main components: the ENS Registry and Name Registrars.
The ENS Registry is a single smart contract that keeps track of all registered domains and the resolver responsible for each domain. It also stores the owner and TTL (Time To Live) for each domain.
Name Registrars are smart contracts responsible for controlling the process of acquiring names. For example, the '.eth' registrar is responsible for the popular '.eth' top-level domain.
Resolvers are responsible for translating names into addresses. A resolver can be configured to return different types of data, allowing ENS names to resolve to more than just Ethereum addresses.
The native token of the Ethereum Name Service is ENS. It is an ERC-20 token operating on the Ethereum blockchain. The ENS token plays a crucial role in the governance of the ENS DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization).
ENS token holders can participate in the governance process by proposing and voting on changes to the protocol. This includes decisions related to the treasury, protocol upgrades, and other important aspects of the ENS ecosystem.
The ENS token distribution included an airdrop to early users of the ENS protocol, rewarding those who had registered and used ENS names prior to a specific snapshot date.
