About the coin
The Brunei Dollar (BND) is the official currency of Brunei Darussalam, a sovereign state located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia.
It is managed and issued by the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board (BCMB), which is part of the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
The Brunei Dollar has been in circulation since 1967, replacing the Malayan dollar at par. It is pegged at par with the Singapore Dollar (SGD), meaning 1 BND is equivalent to 1 SGD. This pegging arrangement has been in place since 1973 and is a significant aspect of Brunei's monetary policy.
The Brunei Dollar is a fiat currency, meaning it is not backed by a physical commodity like gold or silver. Its value is derived from the government's decree and the trust placed in the issuing authority.
The currency is widely accepted within Brunei and is interchangeable with the Singapore Dollar at face value, facilitating trade and travel between the two countries.
The BND is divided into 100 sen.
