About the network

The Stellar Network is a decentralized, open-source protocol for digital currency to fiat currency transfers—any currency, anywhere in the world.

It was founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, one of the co-founders of Ripple, and Joyce Kim. The network aims to make cross-border payments fast, inexpensive, and reliable.

Stellar operates on a unique consensus mechanism called the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP). SCP is a form of federated Byzantine agreement, designed to be secure, fast, and decentralized.

Unlike many other blockchain networks that rely on proof-of-work or proof-of-stake, SCP allows for rapid transaction finality without requiring extensive computational power or large stakes.

The native currency of the Stellar Network is the Lumens, symbolized as XLM. Lumens serve several functions within the network, including acting as a bridge currency for transactions between different fiat currencies and as a mechanism to prevent spam and denial-of-service attacks.

A small amount of XLM is required to create an account and to send transactions, which helps maintain the network's integrity.

The Stellar Network is designed to facilitate the creation and trading of various types of assets, including tokenized representations of fiat currencies, commodities, and other digital assets. This interoperability is a key feature of the network.

The network supports the issuance of custom tokens. For example, USDC (USD Coin) is available on the Stellar Network, demonstrating its capability to host stablecoins and other tokenized assets.

Stellar's architecture is built for speed and efficiency. Transactions on the Stellar Network are typically confirmed in a matter of seconds, with very low transaction fees, making it suitable for high-volume payment systems.

The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), formerly known as the Stellar Foundation, is a non-profit organization that supports the development and growth of the Stellar Network. It works to ensure the network remains open, decentralized, and accessible.

The network's open-source nature allows anyone to build applications and services on top of it. This has led to the development of various payment solutions, remittance services, and other financial tools.

Stellar is actively working with financial institutions and developers worldwide to integrate its technology into existing financial systems and to create new ones.

Key features of the Stellar Network include:

  • Fast transaction processing times (seconds).
  • Low transaction fees.
  • Support for multiple currencies and assets.
  • A robust and efficient consensus mechanism (SCP).
  • An active development community and foundation.

The Stellar Network is operational and actively maintained, with its status confirmed as 'active'.

Users can explore transactions and accounts on the Stellar Network via its explorer, such as steexp.com.
